Virginia’s Petersburg National Battlefield is the home of a siege that led to the end of the American Civil War in 1865. Just before the Memorial Day weekend park staff at the National Battlefield discovered several pits left behind by looters that had been excavating the site for relics.
This is not only disturbing and disrespectful to the men and women who lost their lives in this epic battle but also to every veteran who has served in our Armed Forces as well as the historians and other individuals who have dedicated their lives to putting back together the pieces of history discovered at this location.
The excavated pits left behind by these looters remain an active crime scene at this time. This absolutely disgusting behavior will result in a penalty of up to $20,000 in fines and two years in prison should be individuals be arrested. The shocking truth is many individuals have absolutely zero respect for our veterans and the history of our great nation.
