Pistachios Linked to Salmonella Outbreak

They say don’t eat a closed pistachio because it can make you really sick and potentially even kill you. They are actually poisonous until they are roasted.  Unfortunately, there has been a shocking salmonella outbreak, and it has been linked back to pistachios.

These little nutty treats that we have to watch out for when we eat now had a nasty extra little booger attached hiding in those luscious little shells. The pistachio nut is a favorite snack for kids and adults alike. Kids love to play with the little shells like tiny little Pacman.  It is frightening when salmonella outbreaks occur. Most of the time this is not due to the food itself, it is due to mishandling of the food by man.

Hopefully, you did not get a hold of a closed pistachio or even worse an open pistachio coated in salmonella poisoning. According to the CDC  “At least 11 people in nine states have been infected.” Salmonella primary affects the stomach and results in vomiting and sometimes bloody diarrhea. According to CNN, “Salmonella is responsible for 1 million cases of foodborne illness in the United States annually, including 19,000 hospitalizations and 380 deaths.”
